Bonn Kraków Laboratory for Heavy Ion Physics
Welcome to the Bonn Kraków Laboratory (BKL) for Heavy Ion Physics, a joint virtual laboratory uniting the expertise of AGH University of Krakow, Poland, and the University of Bonn, Germany. The laboratory was founded in 2024 and is based on a cooperation agreement between both universities. Our focus is heavy ion physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), using cutting-edge data from the ATLAS Experiment. Through joint research projects, binational summer schools, internships, and collaborative PhD programs, we foster a spirit of cross-border cooperation and build strong ties between the scientific communities of Poland and Germany. Our mission is to bring nations together through the shared pursuit of fundamental physics.

Summer School 2025
The 2025 German Polish summer school for Heavy Ion Physics will take place from the 10th to the 12th of September in Windeck (Germany)

First Observation of Top-Quark Pair Production in Heavy Ion Collisions
Researchers of the BKL lead the efforts of the ATLAS experiment, leading to the first observation of top-quarks in heavy ion collisions, opening the door to probe the time-structure of the Quark Gluon Plasma!.

New Bonn Kraców Laboratory Offices in Bonn
The Institute of Physics at the University of Bonn gets renovated and hence the BKL office moves to a brand new building in Käthe-Kümmel Strasse 1.
