3rd Quarter 2014 - InGrid Detector

The CAST experiment at CERN searches for axions and chameleons, hypothetical particles which are related to dark matter and dark energy. The experiment is now equipped with a new detector (InGrid detector, a gas-filled pixel detector) for soft X-rays which was built by the Physikalisches Institut

In the CAST experiment a prototype LHC magnet is directed at the sun in the morning and evening. The sun can produce these particles and they can be converted into soft X-rays in the magnetic field.

An electron microscopic view of an InGrid detector. The holes in the aluminium grid have a spacing of 55 micrometers. Below is a Timepix read-out chip with the same pixel size. The InGrid detector is located at the right end of the LHC magnet.
