Priv. Doz. Dr. Tom Jude

This group works in the field of experimental hadron physics. We focus on meson-photoproduction at the BGOOD and INSIGHT experiments. Photons impinge on targets of either liquid deuterium or liquid hydrogen and the resulting excited states are investigated via the identification of their decays. The research group is especially interested in exotic baryons (of more than three valence quarks) in the light quark sector that may have an equivalences to the pentaquark states in the charm quark sector.

The are many opportunities for Masters and Bachelor projects, so please contact me if you are interested!

The BGOOD photoproduction experiment

The BGOOD photoproduction experiment is comprised of a central electromagnetic calorimeter and a forward spectrometer for charged particle identification.

This unique setup enables access to kinematic regions where "exotic" baryon structure of more than three valence quarks may be evidenced.

The INSIGHT experiment

The new INSIGHT experiment,  is an important upgrade for both the BGOOD and Crystal Barrel photoproduction experiments at ELSA. INSIGHT will feature a unique combination of an almost complete angular coverage for high-resolution photon measurements, charged-particle detection and the ability to perform measurements using a polarized beam and a polarized target.  INSIGHT will enable unique possibilities in understanding strange and non-strange baryon resonance spectra and states including their properties.  In addition, it will build upon the research of unconventional baryon structure pursued with BGOOD, addressing the issue of whether exotic states such as pentaquarks observed in the charmed sector  also exist in the strange sector.
